An Amazing Hike: Discover the Theler Wetlands, where the Union River converges with the fjord at Hood Canal, creating a rich wildlife sanctuary.
Spanning hundreds of acres, this preserve, along with the adjacent Washington DFW area, provides a haven for a diverse range of animals. Follow the three-mile trail, traversing bridges and boardwalks, to observe an array of bird and mammal species, including eagles, ospreys, herons, swallows, deer, coyotes, and otters.
Embark on your journey from the Rock Wall Trail to the Wetlands Project Center, a short distance of a quarter mile. Here, explore a garden featuring native plants and a replica gray whale skeleton, as well as captivating outdoor art installations.
Venture further into the wetlands via various paths branching out from the center, offering loop or point-to-point walks. The Sweetwater Creek Trail, spanning 0.1 mile, boasts informative signs along the route. For stunning vistas of the southern Olympic Mountain peaks, tread the 0.25-mile South Tidal Marsh Trail, leading to a viewing point at the edge of Hood Canal.
Experience the serenity of the Alder Creek Swamp Trail, a scenic loop near the nature center, traversing wetlands on a boardwalk. Connect with the River Estuary Trail, meandering through shrubbery and farmland to reach the Union River. Follow the trail along an old dike, eventually looping back to the starting point. Continue along the River Estuary Trail, crossing channels on sturdy bridges, and relish in the sights and sounds of the nutrient-rich Union River. Conclude your journey at a tranquil picnic area with convenient restroom facilities. For a unique viewing experience, follow one of the short spurs to a cedar grove at the river's edge, ideal for observing salmon spawning.
